My “Customer Eyes” in the Emergency Department

cartadvocate.emergency.roomRecently my wife and I had the “Privilege” of visiting our community emergency department. I have been working in association with emergency departments for many years. It is always a different experience however when you visit as a “Customer”. My wife and I have been blessed with 3 beautiful children, and those hospital birthing experiences while being surreal were also times of us having been hospital customers. On this most recent experience I became acutely aware of the medical cart systems on watch throughout the emergency department.

The Scene: After an hour and half of playing football, my seven year old son and the rest of the players ran over to the playground at our local elementary school. It only took two minutes on a state of the art playground for my son to fall from the monkey rings, and break both the radius and ulna bones in his arm at the wrist. Another parent friend, called me from the field and said, “It’s bad!”
We could visually see the bump in the arm, but thank God there was no bone protruding. Tough little guy.

Of course my eyes see all of the medical cart systems stationed throughout the department after my son was admitted and we receive a room. There were various carts in various shapes and colors for various medical cart applications. The code blue crash carts were red, the IV carts were a green, a difficult airway cart was blue, and I saw a yellow isolation cart as well. I had the fortune of knowing I sold these specific medical carts some years back. Pride was not my first feeling when seeing them through my eyes as a customer.  It was more of a sense of being in a controlled and highly effective environment. Comforting to say the least considering the pain my son was feeling and the emotions his Mom and I were having as we watched helplessly.

The code blue crash carts were of course obvious. They featured quick – access lock bars, emergency suction units, and defibrillators on top. Code Blue Crash Carts are almost always red or blue in color. I have provided many red crash carts for hospitals, long term care, and ambulatory surgery centers, but through my son’s father’s eyes, the red looked radiant like mini fire engines standing by.

My wife by my side, I grudgingly left my sons side while he was “Under”. The Emergency physician advised I was welcome to stay for the resetting, but it was simply something I probably did not want to see (radius broke, ulna fractured – pretty bad break).
The staff was phenomenal and the break reset beyond the physician’s expectations. He was hopeful there would not have to be any post surgery or screws…but said it remained a possibility and we would have to wait and see how it healed.

Through the eyes as a customer, the carts represented organization, efficiency, up to date equipment, security, and individual care. Each cart appeared as a customized mobile workstation prepared to empower the staff to deliver the specific care my son may need.
So the next time you have the “Privilege” of being a customer at your community healthcare facility, you may be experiencing far worse pain and emotions than contrived from a broken arm, or exceedingly more joyful like the birth of a baby. But in that time, do look around for the medical cart systems. Know that their storage location, color, and drawer or bin configuration have represent certain applications. Know that these customized medical cart applications empower the healthcare staff, to deliver the quality of care you deserve and expect.
