ASHP Mid Year Recap – 2012

January 25, 2013

Las Vegas, NV – The 47th Mid Year Clinical Meeting and Exhibition American Society of Health System Pharmacist was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. You can see more information on the Symposia offered and exhibitor information here. Offering a Presidential feel to this year’s convention was keynote speaker President Bill Clinton.
The convention is being held at Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort. Also in town simultaneously is the National Pro Rodeo Finals (am I the only one or do pharmacist riding bulls and cowboys on pills come to mind?). Well I didn’t run across either but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I’m convinced somewhere in Las Vegas a pharmacist will be riding a mechanical bull.

The 2012 ASHP Midyear is alive both with exhibitors and attendees. I am enjoying the cowboy theme and even saw a faux gunfight break out! Several medical cart manufacturers are in attendance and exhibiting there “Sunday’s Best” including S&S technology, Swiss log, Metro, Capsa Solutions, Care Fusion/Pyxis, Omni Cell, AmeriSource – Burgen to name a few. Their Sunday best includes code blue crash carts, medication carts, point of care, mobile nurse workstations, mobile computing carts, transfer carts, long term care carts, bedside and nurse server carts. In addition you can see wall carts, wall Pass-Thru’s, and a multitude of medication dispensing cabinets and counter top solutions. Synonymous to many of the vendors are solutions designed around the storage, dispensing, and security of the path of travel of “Pill 2 Patient”. I call this “P-2-P “…Pill 2 Patient. As long as there is a need for P2P, medical mobile cart technology applications will continue to evolve.

The technology in healthcare pharmacy is amazing. Every show is an opportunity to learn about new applications of recent technology. These applications within different workflow models across many healthcare pharmacy facilities, (on and off site), provide for an infinite number of solutions. Many of these solutions are peripheral devices who’s main task is to support this technology in a way that provides accountability, cost reduction, safety, and increased staff work-satisfaction. The medical carts and nurse mobile workstations are true examples of peripheral devices providing this technology through a mobile platform that brings care directly to the patient (pharmaceuticals, equipment or supplies).

Next year’s show will be in Orlando, Florida December 8-12, 2013. You can see more information here.

Great exhibit hall, great theme, great show!
